Swedish schools for music and arts

Sweden is a small country, with an outstanding music export. The municipal schools of music is one of many explanations for that. They started in the 1940’s, and grew rapidly in the 1960’s. The purpose of the music schools was to give youths the possibility to play an instrument, independantly of their background. The long Swedish tradition of adult education, i.e. education for all people, hereby also reached the music education. There are about 290 municipalities in Sweden; 278 of these have music schools, with 363.000 pupils (of a population of 9 million).
